Calculating The Dietary Damage Of The Holiday Season
Get your calculator ready. Halloween is behind us and we’re rapidly closing in on that most wonderful time of the year...The Holiday Season...a festive time filled with family, friends, and food! Tables are laden with the special dishes that only appear at this time of year. Will power weakens and sticking to a diet becomes nearly impossible. If, however, you wonder just how much your diet will suffer, your calculator and some simple math can give you the bad news before it’s too late.
Calculating The Traditional Holiday Meal
No matter how carefully you try to limit your intake, your calculator will soon show you that even a holiday meal is stacked against you. If you prefer white meat, 8 oz of skinless turkey breast is 305 calories. A turkey leg, however, boosts the calorie count to 415. Add in ½ cup of dressing at 239 calories, and 1 cup of mashed potatoes with gravy at 235 calories and your diet loses to deliciousness.
With some items, you can choose how high or low the calorie count will be. For example, 1 cup of canned, processed cranberry sauce is more than 400 calories. The same amount of fresh cranberry relish is only 67 calories. The same is true for green beans. Plain, cooked green beans come in at 31 calories. Make that a green bean casserole with the addition of a can of cream of mushroom soup, ½ cup of milk, and a topping of French fried onion rings and you’ve increased your calorie intake to 227. Finally, 1 cup of cooked yams is 258 calories. Candy those yams with sugar, butter, and cinnamon or a topping of mini marshmallows and you’ll have to cut your portion to just 3 ounces.
If you prefer pumpkin pie for dessert, 1 slice is just over 200 calories. If pecan pie is your choice, the calorie count more than doubles to over 500. Adding whipped cream adds an additional 40 calories per tablespoon to both.
Calculating Your Choices
Using your calculator makes the simple addition and subtraction of the calories in your choices an easy task. The not-so-surprising fact is that most Americans will consume over 1600 calories in just 1 holiday meal. Don’t let these figures cause you mental anguish. Enjoy the Holiday Season to the fullest. There are always those New Year’s resolutions to help get you back on track...till next year.
